- syntaxglitch's scores for the DoZ *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 2628 Topic: AI (specific) Theme 10/20 Successfully used the theme, but didn't really do much with it. Gameplay 30/120 Player control was a bit awkward but passable. Enemy AI was bad, for instance the first "boss" spams bullets aimlessly and is prone to getting into a loop where he keeps falling off the screen endlessly until you hit him. No horrible gameplay problems, at least. Technique 15/80 Programming seemed rudimentary and overall game construction was uninteresting. Use of bullets and other MZX defaults is kinda off-putting, to me at least. Graphics 15/90 Compares unfavorably to Caverns of Zeux. Sorry. Story 25/50 Actually exists, albeit a bit incoherent at times. Sound 25/40 The limited amount of music was good. Lacking in variety and sound effects, however. Overall: 110/400 Successfully captures many aspects of old-skool MZX games. Specifically, the aspects we'd all like to forget about. Credit for actually having a complete game instead of a broken, unfinished entry like so many others, but not the strongest entry overall. *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 2716 Topic: AI (specific) Theme 5/20 Didn't really seem to be relevant to the theme at all. Gameplay 50/120 Decent enough... what of it exists, at any rate. Technique 30/80 Some credit for having a customized combat system, but there's really just not much there. Graphics 20/90 Decent enough. Not impressive, but didn't make me want to gouge my eyes out, either. Points docked mostly for lack of content. Story 5/50 Well, I think there was going to be a story. Probably. There doesn't seem to be much here. Sound 15/40 Limited amount of music and sound effects gets limited amount of points. This is nonzero because what did exist wasn't bad at all. Overall: 125/400 Horribly incomplete, which is unfortunate. There was some amount of potential shown by what did exist. *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 5171 Topic: AI (specific) Theme 10/20 Again, used the theme properly but didn't do anything particularly novel or interesting with it. Gameplay 110/120 Very solid. A few minor annoyances in level design and control, but all together very good. Technique 75/80 Very nice. The spriting and custom attack systems are neat and impressive to have implemented successfully under the time constraints of a DoZ. Docking 5 points mostly because, uhm, in theory it COULD have been better. I think. Graphics 80/90 Very nice, especially for a DoZ game. The player animations and explosions are in particular quite nice and very fluid. Story 25/50 The story carries a very important message about choosing your CPU. Other than that, decent enough but (by the team's own admission) sorta trails off and is a bit haphazzard. Slowly revealing the story from the disks makes the story seem less rubbish than it actually was. ;) Sound 30/40 Solid but not amazing. Overall: 330/400 An excellent job. Deserves a place on any list of "awesome DoZ games". *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 5443 Topic: ??? Theme 0/??? Apparently irrelevant. Gameplay 0/??? Doesn't seem to exist. Technique 0/??? Nothing there. Graphics some/??? Well, these exist, at least. Story 0/??? Vhat is thees 'story' you speak of? Sound some/??? Well, it has a few sound effects.... Overall: incomplete/400 The best feature of this "game" was that it did not take long to judge. *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 5582 Topic: Genetics (general) Theme 5/100 Doesn't really seem to be present. 5 points given for using the word "mutant" at least once (which is the only way I knew which topic this was using). Gameplay 10/90 Well, the game is actually interactive, thus gameplay does EXIST, in an theoretical sense. Technique 0/60 Mmmmmno, not really. Graphics 10/70 I suppose it could be worse. Story 0/50 Doesn't seem to exist. Sound 0/30 Also doesn't seem to exist. Overall: 25/400 Yet another incomplete game. *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 7676 Topic: AI (specific) Theme 10/20 Makes an effort to use the theme but doesn't really do much with it. Gameplay 20/120 Awkward, poor gameplay and a handful of bugs. Technique 10/80 Doesn't really do anything interesting. Graphics 20/90 Showed at least a minimal amount of effort, but overly repetitive and lacking in detail. Story 10/50 A story was at least attempted, but was very underdeveloped. Sound 15/40 Limited amounts of sound, not of the best quality or appropriateness. Overall: 85/400 This felt like a very rushed effort. Clearly needed more time and more playtesting. *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 8165 Topic: Genetics (general) Theme 70/100 Pretty basic approach to the theme. Nothing wrong, per se, but doesn't really do anything interesting with the theme or work into the gameplay beyond the usual superficial backstory stuff. Gameplay 60/90 Nothing special but also no significant problems. Technique 20/60 Pretty standard MZX fare. Nothing really unique going on here. Graphics 40/70 Fairly rudimentary but not terrible either. Story 30/50 Relatively bland but well integrated. Opening narration was handled well, but the ending could've done with a bit less wanky rambling--leave that nonsense to final bosses in Japanese RPGs, where it belongs. Sound 15/30 Sufficient but could have been better. Needed more sound effects and better use of music. Overall: 235/400 A competent enough game. Doesn't really do anything wrong, but doesn't really shine anywhere, either. *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 8898 Topic: FAIL Theme 0/??? Not relevant. Gameplay 0/??? Doesn't seem to have gameplay. Barely interactive at all, for that matter. Only in the loosest sense is this a "game" at all. FAIL. Technique some/??? The way this is programmed is neat, at least. Graphics kinda not bad/??? Nice enough I guess, would've been cute in a REAL entry. :P Story 0/??? CRAZY MOON LANGUAGE!!?!1 Sound decent/??? Pretty good... surprisingly enough. Overall: weeaboo/400 HOLY FUCK WHAT IS THIS WEEABOO SHIT GET IT OFF ME OH GOD NO MAKE IT STOP *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 18385 Topic: Genetics (general) Theme 80/100 Fairly standard approach to the theme with a least a couple small twists. Gameplay 60/90 Battle system is nicely done, but a little simplistic tactically and controls are sometimes nonresponsive. Obviously DoZ time constraints are tough, but with a little more work this could be really neat. Battles are sometimes sluggish due to huge distances you have to move but with tiny movement ranges. :( Technique 60/60 Very nice overall, especially for something done in a DoZ. Graphics 45/70 Pretty solid, but nothing amazing. A little blocky. Story 40/50 Good effort put into story, nicely done for a DoZ game. Sound 20/30 Lacking in sound effects, but music was nice and used well. Overall: 305/400 This game feels unfinished, as in rough around the edges. It could really shine if polished up post-DoZ into a proper game. *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 23217 Topic: Genetics (general) Theme 30/100 Relevance to the topic seems to be tangential at best. Mentioned, but not really developed in any meaningful way. Gameplay 50/90 Not bad. The bullet engine was kind of fun, but the enemies were uninteresting and it felt a little clunky overall. Technique 30/60 Nothing ground-breaking here, but not built-ins either. Could be worse. Graphics 20/70 Not really that great. Too many default chars, no interesting animations. Story 10/50 Doesn't really seem to be much of one. Sound 10/30 Mood-setting music in some places, but altogether rather lacking in the sound department. Overall: 150/400 This game could have benefited from smaller areas with better graphics and more detail. The basic gameplay is good, but needed more fine-tuning. *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 27347 Topic: Genetics (general) Theme 60/100 Basic use of the theme, but nothing too remarkable. Gameplay 70/90 Pretty good, with a few occasional problems. Controls were awkward when firing at an angle and the difficulty tended to be unbalanced, but overall pretty playable. Technique 40/60 Game engine and bosses show at least some interesting use of Robotic. Graphics 30/70 Blocky, simple graphics. Not bad exactly, but could've been much better. Story 20/50 A bit lacking in development. Sound 20/30 Decent enough but not great. Overall: 240/400 This game was actually pretty fun. Needed some work on difficulty and a bit of polish, but the core is pretty neat. *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 28635 Topic: AI (specific) Theme 5/20 Theme was very forced and largeley irrelevant. Gameplay 70/120 Not bad overall, but very arbitrary puzzles and a few bugs bring the score down. The amount of length and detail put in are nice, however; even if nothing is particularly fancy it's a lot of stuff for a DoZ game. Technique 20/80 Complexity and use of Robotic is minimal, but better than nothing. Graphics 20/90 Definitely leave something to be desired. Too much use of default chars with minimal editing. Story 25/50 Largely nonsensical but hey this is a DoZ. At least there was more of it than most other entries. Sound 0/40 Doesn't seem to have any. Overall: 140/400 Kinda fun in an old-school MZX adventure game sorta way. *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 31067 Topic: AI (specific) Theme 10/20 The theme plays a major role in the game... relative to the amount of game that exists. ;) Gameplay 10/120 Could have been improved by existing. Doesn't technically do anything WRONG, though, so 10 bonus points! Technique 20/80 Well, it didn't use built-ins, so yeah. Graphics 40/90 Nice use of very blocky MZX-ish graphics, actually. I kinda like the style. Story 5/50 5 bonus points for ending that mentions disco! Sound 10/40 Kinda nice for what exists! The title screen sound effects were fun :\ Overall: 95/400 I kinda wish this had been completed. :( *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 40984 Topic: AI (specific) Theme 10/20 Uses the theme but doesn't expand upon it very much. Gameplay 30/120 Not much of it really, but decent enough for a simple platformer implementation and all. Technique 10/80 Limited use of Robotic, and not much content overall. Graphics 20/90 Default characters and limited detail. Story 35/50 Limited, but what does exist is written and presented well. Sound 10/40 Sound effects are fine, but lacks music. Overall: 115/400 The game claims to be one of the author's first stabs at Megazeux; if so it turned out pretty well, even if it doesn't really stack up next to the games by multiperson teams with lots of prior experience. *************************************************************************************** *************************************************************************************** 76385 Topic: Genetics (general) Theme 0/100 Massively incomplete.
