Hurricane Katrina hit my town :p.

I'm safe, however, so don't worry. I'm up in Kentucky at my step-aunt's until things get better down in southern Mississippi. It's pretty bad down there. A couple of days ago my mom and I waited in a car for 2 hours just to get a bit of gas at some of the working gas stations in town. Down trees and power lines are everywhere (although oddly enough, only like 2 or 3 trees hit houses, and none caused damage). Luckily, Coast Electric (the town's electricity provider) is working very quickly at getting all the poles back up and the power lines in functioning order. It stinks in my house because a bunch of the stuff in the fridge spoiled, and there's no AC unless you turn on the generator, which requires gas, which right now is a valued substance. So, I'm going to hang here, perhaps go to school for a couple of weeks up here while my school in Mississippi repairs the damage from the storm.

Also, while New Orleans is all that is covered on CNN and the like, consider the rest of the Gulf Coast. In Gulfport, there's a McDonald's where all that's left is the golden arches. Whole foundations have just been carried away by the storm surge. The casinos are in the middle of the street. It'll be a long while before that area recovers, and there are lots of people struggling to survive in the ruins. Donate and stuff if you can, because we need all the help we can get down there.

I'll be posting a bit less but don't worry about it.

I am glad you're okay.

And I will donate stuff; in fact my school is having a donate-a-kit thing. I'll participate.

Again, glad you're doing fine, and sorry about any losses.

Hey it's good to hear from you Ler, you had us all worried for a while. Do you know anybody who was caught up in the storm?

EDIT: Rephrased.

Good to hear you're okay =)
Hurricanes are scary. This whole mess is horrible. =( I know what you're going through, to a lesser extent-- I had to leave my house for a while after Charley hit. It wasn't that severe though and I got to go home after a week or two, but I can kind of sympathize with what you're dealing with... kind of... though I can't imagine how horrible it must be in the hardest hit areas o_O...

(I've been donating what little money I have to hurricane relief... I wish I had more to give.)
Here I am, back from space! Now, where are the ghosts?

Good to hear from you ler, I was kind of worried. Glad you're okay.

We've had people flocking to hotels and apartments here, and people are starting up "adopt-a-family" programs around here. St. Louis is a hot spot for Katrina victims.

How much damage has your home recieved, and how long do you suppose it will be before you are back in Mississippi?

It's quite boring in #mzx without you.

It's full of stupid losers.

On Crush Yiff Destroy there was a thread and somebody was like I AM SURPRISED THERE IS NO TERRIBLE FURRY TRIBUTE ART YET. So we made our own.

http://dr_dos.box43.net/Pics/neworleansfurry.jpg I dedicate this to you.

It is based off a hilarious furry gay pride picture.

My house has like no damage (none of the houses in my neighborhood had any, which is weird because like every other tree you see has been pulled up by the roots or snapped in half, but none of them hit roofs) despite the fact that my backyard has a rather large creek. I'll probably go back in a couple of weeks when it's safer down there (down power lines, fallen trees, snakes, and disease are not good for kids, which is why my mom took me and my twin 4-year-old brothers up here to Kentucky).

I can't believe you guys were worried, though. Nice to hear there's plenty of compassion or something in the community. Good to hear that you guys are sending relief down there, too. It's pretty awful. I saw power lines tangled in my friends bushes in his front yard (luckily he was smart enough to get out of there).

I probably won't be able to get on irc for a while, but when I get home I can get on. I've found a DDR machine around here (I'm south of Lexington, in Wilmore) and I have my PS2 so I'm not totally bored.

Okay, quick question: Can someone direct me to a web based IRC client that will let me connect to Esper? I've googled a bit and it seems that there are none, so maybe someone can set up one?

You can actually SSH into box43 account via the box43 homepage and use box43's text-based irc client.

It's a shame that it's no longer up, but neskaya used to have a pretty good online client; the only one we could find with multi-channel support.

Also, using SSH for that is evil. EVIL.

As for the hurricane, ler: forget what I said back in IRC that time, okay? Believe what you want; you and your family probably need your prayers now more than ever.

Also I fail to believe that all the Australians that were trapped in New Orleans are actually blaming the Australian government for not extracting them. How bloody ludicrous. What, were they supposed to send in military to occupy New Orleans, or something? That's a fucking joke, if ever I heard one.

If you're going to be using SSH to get on IRC it's best to just have the SSH client tunnel a local port through port 22 to an established connection on the other side (assuming the server supports port forwarding). Then you can just connect your usual IRC client to localhost.

Exo: the reason I was using SSH in the first place was because I'm on my aunt's computer :/.

Also, bad news. They haven't started working on the phone lines at home so it could be a long while before I get internet again. I might be gone for a nice long time :p.

I live in Australia so I've only seen about the hurricane on TV. It looks pretty bad, I'm just lucky, where I live (Tasmania, Australia) we pretty much NEVER get natural disasters other than a bit of flash flooding.

In Tasmania, maybe...

However, Hurricanes are constantly battering the coasts of Australia, not to mention the natural hazard that's been going on for nearly 10 years now (this freaking drought).

Australia is pretty susceptible to nature if you ask me.

Actually that animation Stak posted does this thing justice.

Anyway I'm going to be leaving today to go back home. I'll stop in Huntsville though to play DDR and sleep.
