Okies...so...I haven't been working on the Speaker In Dreams in a while, since I need to figure out the basics of the battle engine...plus I need to animate all of the characters...

About half a year ago or so I drew this guy with a sword in MZX...and then I forgot the whole thing...

However, quite recently, I actually managed to finish the rest of the animations for this guy...and I decided to give it a try.

So far this seems to be one of the most promising games I've ever been working on...because...surprise surprise, all of the engines (this basicly means sword-, walk-, and spell-engines...) are done. All of the character animations are done. Inventory/Menu thingy is done. The basic monsters are done. I've already started to work on the playable boards.

The game is called:

Dragonbreed

Prologue

About 20 years ago the kingdom of Gargaroth was a country full of civil wars and such. Chaos, everywhere. After years of fighting, the people were exhausted. Everyone was hoping for someone to take control, slay the monsters and teach the Thieves Guild a lesson. And someone came. A fair lady, known as Mantha, became the first queen in Gargaroth's history. She did what everyone wanted, and quickly became famous all around the whole Dimenscio. Everything seemed to be fine, and people were happy.

However, the joy and peace didn't last for too long. The neighbour kingdom, Percival, claimed that their princess, Teleanor, had been kidnapped by the agents of Gargaroth. Mantha made clear, that she had no idea where the princess is. The army of Percival marched into Gargaroth. The war had begun. Once again Mantha had to earn people's trust, and so she participated the war herself. She took her sword, and rode into battle with her bravest warriors. Apparently Mantha was incredibly powerful in magic, which certainly helped her. Then something happened. No one knows how, and exactly when, but Mantha fell off his saddle and lost her conciousness. As she was lying on the ground, a soldier called Callagar, came and raped her. Luckily, wounded Mantha was brought back to Gargaroth, and the priests managed to heal her. Gargaroth somehow managed to win that war as well, even though this horrible incident happened.

Afterwards, Mantha gave birth to a healthy and charming child. The boy was given the name Galladin. Then 8 years later, Mantha became seriously ill. Her flesh itched, her eyes became red, and she had horrible nightmares. This mysterious disease made her go insane, murdering her loyal servants. Finally, she killed herself. She left a personal note to little Galladin, in which she told how Galladin was born, and who was his real father. Mantha's personal assistant became the new ruler, and he strongly disliked the young prince. He and his supporters threw Galladin into the local salt mines.

Galladin worked in the salt mines for 6 years, and hatred and madness grew inside his young heart. (OH ANGST!) Hatred against his father and the new king. Then, in the year 609 aWotG (after War of the Gods), a great earthquake shaked the whole land of Dimenscio. Maybe this is Galladin's chance to finally escape from the mines?


The game features 4 spells (I was too lazy to make more of them), a real-time sword engine, 2x2 characters, fully animated main character, somewhat decent graphics, and...uh...character development, and stuff like that. :redeemerwhore:

The game seems intresting... hopefully it'll be released when I have the possibility of playing MZX games here... or else I'll have to get it at my dad's place.

Hm, I guess I should tell you guys something about the game mechanics.

Character Development
The player gains Karma as he succeeds at something; ie tasks, solving riddles, killing enemies, and stuff like that. As your Karma rating is at 10, you are granted 1 Karma Point. You can use the Karma Points to learn spells, increase your Magi amount, and to boost up your attributes or skills.

The Spells
The player can cast spells by pressing ALT, and then TYPING in the casting word of the spell that he wants to cast. Casting a spell absorbs a certain amount of your Magi (MagiCow lolz! :redeemerwhore:). In the beginning the player has a Magi rating of 20, which will increase as the player gains Karma.

The player must buy the spells by using the Karma Points he has gained.

Melee Combat
The player can swing his sword by pressing SPACE. Unfortunately, there are no combos or different kind of moves and stuff like that. ;)

Every time you swing your sword, a random number between 0 and 100 is rolled. Here's what the different results mean:

0-15 = Miss (= 0 pts of damage)
16-65 = Limbs (= 1-4 pts of damage)
66-85 = Torso (= 4-10 pts of damage)
86-95 = Head (= 10-18 pts of damage)
96-100 = Critical Hit (= 18-28 pts of damage)

After this, the Weapon Damage and the character's Strength attribute are added to the damage. For example, you rolled an 18, and you are wielding a Bastard Sword that does 2 points of damage. Also, your Strength is 3. This means that your damage will be 1-4+2+3, up to a maximum of 9.

Just so that the game wouldn't be really difficult, the enemies don't get to roll a number from 0 to 100. Instead, all monster races deal a different amount of damage, for example, a kobold does 1-4 points of damage with a single hit.

Skills
There are 3 skills in the game. Diplomacy, Bluff, and Intimidate. The player cannot use the skills himself. For example, in some situations, the might change the outcome of a certain conversation, and so on. For example, a character with a high Intimidate skill might be able to force someone to give him some money for the food or something.

There's also one special ability that the player can use, but I'm not going to tell you anything about it. ;)

I had a funny feeling this Sir Galladin would be involved when I clicked on the link...by the way, the screenshots look great...I didn't do much reading. I get lazy sometimes.

same as pcmicah1, though, I didnt do much reading, though, from what I see this game will kick ass.

Also, like always, I need music & good, clean .SAM files. Badly.

I was also going to make the game to play sams on every footstep, but I realized that it'd be a pain in the ass for people who don't have the sounds working with MZX...

If only I had the time to give you SAM's - I could make some nice magic and sword sounds...but unfortunately, my job, my PS2, and the fact that I'm moving take up my time.

Serious damage to important body parts pretty much ruins any plans you had for living. Bummer.

Hm. I haven't been able to finish the "Salt Mines"-area yet, because I've been having fever & headache lately. Today I felt a lot better, and I made a new board. And took some more screenshots.

I know, I know, they're kinda similar to those I've already shown, but still... ;)

He-hey,

Ler; I'm pretty sure I'll finish this one, although I haven't made many boards yet.

I've also been working on Dragonbreed again. I've edited the enemies a little, for example, now they bleed and dodge your strikes. However, if you have higher Dexterity score than they have, they won't be able to dodge.

I added a new board as well.

I really don't think the "pushing cart towards the rocks" could be any more obvious. :P

Really, really great game Marcus. Graphics are superb. As for bugs, I didn't notice any, but I didn't really look either. You better finish this. :)

I already did...if you don't kill the second guard first, but run to the room with the rats instead...well...when you go back to the room with the second guard...he will be...fucked...up. It's kinda easy to fix, though...

Plus there are some other issues, but I'm not gonna fix them all ;)
