I never actually heard of KM's Univers until a month or so ago, when I saw it had 5 stars and a gushing review by Drelick. So I played it and... meh. Short game with features that weren't actually useful; it was okay, but hardly deserving 5 stars (I'd give it a 3). There was an obvious sequel hook, so I played part 2 and... I wasn't pleased. It was longer but also buggier, and I think a sidescrolling section was stolen from Alien Wars. I couldn't finish it fairly, so needless to say I didn't like it as much.
Finally, there's a special edition of the first Univers. I hate it. Buggy shit is buggy shit, it's like the creator didn't bother testing his own game. I almost finished it but some really stupid board linking near the end got me stuck. Whatever, the boss battle kept crashing MZX anyway (damn if I know why).
So... why all the praise? Is it just me because I wasn't around for it at the time or something?

Does KM's Univers really deserve so much praise?

Alien Wars! I had forgotten all about Alien Wars! Now that's a game!!! F********, WILLIAM BUBEL, man. Talented guy.
"Conservatism, though a necessary element in any stable society, is not a social program; in its paternalistic, nationalistic, and power-adoring tendencies it is often closer to socialism than true liberalism; and with its traditionalistic, anti-intellectual and often mystical propensities it will never, except in short periods of disillusionment, appeal to the young and all those others who believe that some changes are desirable if this world is to become a better place. A conservative movement, by its very nature, is bound to be a defender of established privileged and to lean on the power of government for the protection of privilege." -Friedrich Hayek

I'm appalled that Ben Cheeze doesn't have the same popularity as Stan. I mean, that old guy practically defines COUNTRY.MOD!

Luke also likes August and those Doomsday Dream Legend games. I think his rating scale tends to be something like 0 or 5.
~ ex0 has a kickass battle engine, without it you sux0rz! without it you sux0rz! ~

Hey, thanks for the heads up. For future reference, though, we do have a Bug Tracker for listing bugs like this, so if you find anything else wrong with MZX, you know what to do.

Why does that particular board crash MZX anyway?
And is the game really that shoddy? I mean instead of buying ammo with coins, I'm buying coins with ammo.

The GDM converter's throwing its arms up at that board's GDM, causing the program to exit with an error condition. check stderr.txt after the crash for evidence of this. EDIT: This is because it's actually a mod file renamed .gdm. ffffffff
Also, yeah, it's shoddy. Something you've not mentioned yet: you can defend in the RPG battles and then immediately select attack/shoot, giving yourself the benefits of defending while still dealing damage.
