on that note, was my doz entry REALLY worse than Hero's Quest?
<phthalocyanine> they make experiences.
<Nadir> demos, more like
<Nadir> a glimpse into what could have been if mzx wasn't such a bore to work with
<Nadir> actually, i'm being unfair
<Nadir> i would have made mzx games if it was capable of running on more than 20 computers worldwide in 1998
<Nadir> >:D
<%Alice> functor
<%nooodl> i hear C++ has a thing called functors and they're completely different from Haskell functors...
<rorirover> the result is the most horrid thing in C++, it's basically black magic and it transforms any code you're writing into some eldritch monstrosity

short version: points for doing it, but not too many points because it sounded kinda amateurish and not really emotive. sorry i forgot to talk about it.
also please feel free everyone to pm or email me comments on my scores. i'm new at this whole judging thing and looking to improve.

Solo entries win pretty regularly. Hell, Lancer won solo last time too.
And rats, your scores are gone now. I wanted to see what the fuss was about.

Click to download a zip with a bigger version of this image if you want to scale it down differently, and a collection of screenshots from all of the games (besides one notable exception). This is meant for the archive, and I'd have put them up myself, but I didn't see this DoZ in the Competitions section. I plan to do this for Summer 09 and possibly a few more of the more recent DoZs, and Kuddy mentioned wanting to go back through the old DoZs, doing something similar.

What you heard was actually the second take of that voice clip. I wanted to improve on it (since the more times I heard it the more times I kept picking it apart), but I didn't want to waste time constantly retaking it; I was on a deadline, after all. However, I still think it works for what it's worth. I kind of left emotion out of it since the setting was pretty grim to begin with it.
Regardless, thank you for the comment.

You mean after telling you you should be ashamed of yourself in the other thread Wervyn didn't actually give specific criticism? How sloppy. Personally, I didn't think your scores were highly terrible, with the exception of 11617 (which can largely be written off due to being bottom of the barrel). But you really need to give detailed comments with each section, and more core material, less side commentary. Some of the scores seemed contrary to the text at hand. Fortunately the scores struck me as the more fitting. The profanity was really not necessary ;P
Calling 36306 the best entry in the DoZ means you have pretty bad taste (as with giving its story category a higher score than say, Celestial Alter's), but that doesn't automatically make you a bad judge. We've put up with worse. You're better than Old Sckool, at least.
At any rate, while I didn't think 11617's scores mattered that much I do think that you shouldn't give a game that wasn't clearly a joke all 0's, with the exception of a 50% music score for no audio. I don't know if the audio score was just for pity or what, but if it was then it's not really okay to break consistency even if the game is a write-off. If it really was consistent then you absolutely shouldn't give a game half points for no music. The convention is to give 1 point for not utterly damaging our ears.
The word count requirement wasn't made up on the spot, but what really is supposed to happen is that the host reviews the scores and if there's something glaringly wrong with them makes the judge improve them. But I understand stuff came up for Kuddy that made it hard to really do this, and this IS the first time that we've had a narrow 1 week judging period. I suppose Kuddy should have passed it along to someone else to handle, but what can you do.

qft. last competition had a 1-week limit. i specifically remember werv talking about how the days of eating pealed grapes from the hands of nubile young slave girls was over and how the judges were going to be held to a higher standard.
also, for the record, i gave 4 points for no sound. it's not enough to make or break a game, but it's enough to punish an entry like 72165 for including but failing to utilize some really awful stuff and a bunch of zip-bloating sound effects.
and i'm still waiting for more feedback. i've already had one author ask for clarification on how and why i scored their game the way i did. like i said, if i'm doing this badly i want to know so that i can improve (or possibly pass up next time.) feedback plz?

It did use the sound effects. I'm not sure why they didn't work for you unless you had the music turned way up. It was already too loud as it is. Your scores seemed perfectly fair other than that. Did you actually think the sound effects were just bad in general?
