Welcome to the Winter 2006 DoZ. Before we begin, I'd like to say a word about two important changes from recent DoZ's.

The first and most important is the change in the scoring system. We now have two sets of point distrobutions; one for the general theme and the other for the specific theme. The general topic's "theme" category is now worth 100/400 and the specific topic's "theme" category will be worth 20/400. The rest of the categories have approximately equal relative weights. Thus, if you are using the general topic, make sure to include it everywhere in your game.

The second important thing to note is that the grace period has changed a little bit. After the 24 hours have ended, you have 15 minutes to submit your game without penalty. After these 15 minutes, the penalties increase dramatically: 15% (16-30m), 30% (31-45m), 50% (46-60m). Please submit your games on time.

On that note, the preferred method of submitting will be uploading to ftp://devzero.co.uk/ If you don't want to do that, check the doz page for other methods (including email and AIM).

When you submit, make sure your file is called #####.zip, where ##### is your team number. If you're uploading a second version of your game, call the file #####-2.zip, etc.

The General topic is "Memory." The Specific topic is "Flight." You have 24 hours. Good luck.

How to win Memory Leak:

Okay, the dungeon is hopelessly broken, to fix, go into the boards dungeon and dungeon2. in the lower left corner, along with all the other robots, there is a single unnamed robot. Delete it from both boards. Save. Now you can win the game.

In Irreplacable Memory, use Z to shoot. Use X and C to switch offence and defence spells respectively. The 'grade' of your offence and defence spells is shown (ranges from C to A+), but you may find some attacks in a grade to be better than others against certain enemies. Using a fire attack against fire enemies will do very little damage, for example.

Okay, Maybe I'm the only one but is memory leak just the most buggy thing you ever played?

I've seen enemies turn into solid squares of color.

The dialogue engine should pause enemies, I was killed several times when someone decided to talk to me and I was brutally killed by coosh balls (or whatever those enemies are)

The enemies damage too quickly.

The pixel movement puts you at a disadvantage, when trying to get away from an enemy, especially in parts of the board where you have to pass through ONE char thick area's, you have to be PERFECTLY centered to the pixel if you hope to escape at all, and then you'll probably easily get cornered.

And that's in the first three boards of gameplay alone. I was killed on the second and third boards every time. Damn thing.

EDIT: enemies too short, they attack your lower char from the side and you're paralized in frustration as he kills you and you yoyo right over his head. GREAT.

Fritz Blitz controls:

shift to move slowly

Z to shoot

Q to cheat

And now, about the bugs in the game... I haven't found any.

"The Red Giant" Controls:

Left mouse click to move around
Right mouse click to open the action menu
Enter to see the controls

Whenever you see the cursor flashing in blue, it means there's something worth taking a look into at that exact position.

Just for the record, you can make every jump in Fuzzy Loses His Memory. Just thought I'd make that clear.

Also yes, I know about the level designs with regard to color and such; I've already been informed.

Sorry Koji, after pushing my body well beyond its limits for a few days straight (I did stay up all night working on gpSP 0.9 first) and acquiring cold germs from traveling I finally succumed to illness and literally collapsed towards the end of the DoZ, losing a couple hours that could have went towards fixing/balancing all of those things (and including char sets and things like that). Sorry, I know this is a great disappointment to you, and that we should have dropped out like you do every single DoZ ever. How many have you entered and dropped out of now, like 5? You haven't finished a SINGLE FUCKING DOZ, and if you really think this is the most buggy DoZ game ever then you actually need to play more of them.

Really, stop being such a giant jack-ass prick, I'm tired as all hell of reading every last goddamn post you make on these forums, you're annoying and you're an idiot.

Exo, I'm sorry, I didn't know what you went through this DOZ and really I was expressing my frustration at the game more than anything else.

Also "buggiest thing I've ever seen" was hyperbole I know there are much buggier games out there. I've only completed one doz because things come up. Like the last few years every weekend I've had to devote to working at the warehouse. And although I've switched jobs and was looking forward to doz, I missed it again beause I would rather have been by my brothers bedside.

He was recently put back into the hospital for infections again, and was well, anyway he began to speak. He greeted a nurse with "hi" and repeated it several times for people who asked him, and when I got there he was even saying "yeah" and "no" in responce to questions. So I was GLAD to miss the doz for that. After I met with Sam the rest of the family and I went to celebrate and when I got home I was exhausted and decided against the doing a half doz and went to sleep. That's all.

I didn't mean to hurt your feelings with what I said, I was only expressing frustration toward the game which you must admit is flawed. It probably wouldn't be half as flawed if you didn't make it pixel perfect movement, but reguardless. I know that what I posted was in bad taste and my comments probably weren't the best example of constructive criticism.

REALLY my frustration at the games is probably just me venting frustration about my inability to get anything done with my larger projects when everyone can seemingly get so much done in 24 hours. I know that anything I'd make in 24 hours couldn't hold a candel to your usual DOZ preformances.

I'm sorry, no hard feelings?

Repeat Exo's post, except cutting out the irrelevant stuff, for everyone who yells at me about how crappy Irreplaceable Memory is. I _KNOW_ it's crappy! I also know that I put more work into that 24 hours that I have ever put into anything else over a similar duration in my entire life. Please appreciate the work that went into it, rather than just looking at the flaws which most of you seem to be doing!

Remember--I AM NOT AN ARTIST. Having to draw approximately 150 individual frames of animation (count the number of files in the sprz directory) was very, very agonising for me.

Yes I know I probably mismanaged my time, but I think I got a lot of good graphical effect out of the work I put into it. IT WAS NOT EASY TO MAKE.

EDIT: Oh, and if the game doesn't play for you in the gameplay section, TRY IT AGAIN (you can edit the game and test from 'GameEngine' and play it. It DOES work. I've tried the version that was in the torrent, both testing and playing right from the start, properly, in THREE VERSIONS OF MZX, including MZX 281c and MZX 281d as released on this site. It works fine.

Thank you for your apology, I wasn't really expecting it. I'm sorry I unloaded on you this harshly. It was just really hard and despite those bugs and flaws there's nothing that would have taken an extremely long time to deal with, I just felt cheated of time. It happens, DoZes are pretty hit or miss, usually miss. And I'm frustrated because we always try our very best, this time we just fell somewhat short instead of really missing out entirely. We usually try to do something new and different, rather than rehash similar efforts. I personally haven't DoZed in a long time, but this was really bad timing for me.

I don't think it'd be better w/o pixel movement though. I think that it fundamentally adds a lot to the gameplay, it just needs to be tweaked. That's why we're releasing a fix up version to take care of everything, so people can experience the gameplay and plot the way it was meant to (and of which most of the programming and content is there for already).

FWIW I think both the games were awesome and they set the bar for DoZs to come.

I think most of the negativity is probably jealousy.

I was very impressed with Fritz Blitz... definitely the finest implementation of a shmup ever in MZX. Haven't really played too many of the other ones to nearly the amount of depth, but that game is definitely the game of the DOZ for me.

Memory and flight, eh? I should have entered the DoZ and made a game called "Bostwick Buzzard Forgets How to Fly", thereby using both topics to my advantage, and also the word "buzzard."

Or, surprise everybody with a really serious game about zombies and having a really great dream but then forgetting it, and rain.
