If you have a feature suggestion for the front page, post it here. Current features we're considering the addition of in the future are:
  • A welcome message and FAQ.
  • Game of the Month section on the menu.
  • Latest Games section on the menu.
  • Stats (registered members, games submitted, reviews submitted, etc.) somewhere on the page. I'm open to suggestions on this one, both location- and stat-wise.
  • Game information pages with screenshots and download links.
  • Stars on reviews as opposed to 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, etc. (DONE)

How about adding a "community quote" block? Quotes from the DigiBoards and IRC could be added to a list by elite members and they could be randomly displayed either per visit or per day.

Edit: It wouldn't be practical in any way but I think it would be fun if properly executed.

Edit 2: s/functional/practical

  • Number of reviews for each game.
  • A "more..." link for recent reviews.
  • Not front page, but a list of games submitted in members' profiles
  • Don't let creators review their own games (this is a really easy one to add)

Yay my suggestion from ages ago about game of month is going into action:D

1.I know there is a digiboards link but maybe the last post of ALL of the forums

2.Top games overall(like a rating system for the best, like every member can vote on each once)

thats mine

How about setting it up so that people that only people with 50-100 posts can review games? That would cut back on some of the crap reviews (hopefully) and make it so that authors cannot review their own games with an alternate account.

I just added a new mandatory rule in the ToS for that. Also, the review system makes it very easy to delete such reviews.

I think the features you're "considering on adding in the future" sound like they'd make the site as a whole more fun to visit. No real suggestions here.

As a reply to Fighter Phil:

1. I'd love to do it, but the structure of the forum tables would make this very very difficult.

2. I dont QUITE understand what you're saying here, but it sounds like you're asking for a seperate rating system just so you can see what the top games are. This, in my opinion, is rather... useless, and its reinventing the wheel. I can, however, have a Top 5 games section BASED on the already in place review system and the averages for games, but it would take me a while to code and I am currently working on an admin feature of this front page system that will take me a little while.

Regarding screenshots and information: allow the user to attach up to three screenshots in the review section (if a review does not exist for the game, they must write a review to post screenshots). Of course we'd have to have guidelines for the screenshots (they must be GOOD screenshots - so nobody makes a "sarcastic" screenshot, e.g. Cans on the test board, Sivion in the middle of dialog, etc.).

As a reply to Insidious

1.I understand it it would be hard programming it

2.Sort of like it adds all the stars together and the one with the most is it? but that might not work because little games that have like a million 1's might be rated good

So your first point (1.) is ruled out. And point (2.) is an endless chasm of death. It seems both your points are eliminated. "I'll uh-take it." "You'll take what?" "Eliminate. A nice-uh cold glass of E-Lemonade." -Chico Marx

I've got a sarcastic idea! Why not take all of the review scores, tabulate them up, find the sample standard deviation, then find an appropriate z-score for each review; THEN have 6 sections of reviews: one for ones with zscores: below -2.62, between -2.62 and -1.29, between -1.28 and 0.44, between 0.45 and 1.91, and those greater than 1.91. I mean, it would work perfectly!!

Guys, make sure you consider when asking for a feature if the feature is really worth the work (i.e. the more work something would take to add, the better the idea must be) and that it's a good idea anyway. Maybe talk it over with someone else who knows DMZX (like someone in #mzx or someone over PM or if you're lucky stupid enough to have a friend who goes on DMZX, too, use him), and bounce the idea off of them.

Most websites don't have something like this, where you can make real suggestions and an admin is very very likely to read it and even possibly implement the suggestion. Do you know why that is? Because when they do, the website usually gets flooded with terrible ideas. So, do as Smokey the Bear (or Smacky the Frog) says, and prevent forest bad ideas.

2. No, Fighter Phil. It ALREADY averages the stars, such that something with 8 1s gets a 1 and something with 8 5s gets a 5 and something with 8 5s and 8 1s gets a 2.5, rounded up to a 3.

See, this is the law of mean averages, and this is what you see when you look at the games directory.

How about a Spotlight Game of the Moment, where the Admins/Elites vote on an MZX game to show on the front page every few weeks or so?

i like the 'game of the month' idea. zeuxworld implemented it pretty well with the screenshot and a link to the game.
i'm not sure how a game info page would work (would it be done by an admin or could anyone do it?) but it'd be nicer than just the reviews.
also, i don't see any reason to prevent the author from reviewing his own work. most authors don't do it anyway, and i don't see how it'd be a problem.
<Tox> bah. I may as well give in and shop australia. D:
<pyro1588> "welcome to australia, can i help you find what you're looking for?"

I just noticed something - there is no way to rank a game as zero stars out of five. Is this intended?

Then there'd be no absolute average. :p
(12345) (012345)

Why 6 choices instead of 5? Why not just make it 17 choices while you're at it?

I would like the option to edit your own reviews. However, because it would take a little time to code in, a 'delete' option would provide essentially the same functionality.

A report button, similar to the one in the forums, would be a nice addition. That way bad reviews can be easily flagged and taken care of.

  • Link to download the game off of the reviews page
  • Make Sai`ke's name link to her profile for Keep Smilin' (it currently says Sai'ke)

Sure this isn't exactly front page, but still- previous and next links at the bottom of the downloads pages to cycle through the alphabet would be a helpful addition.

One little thing for the review system: Give the user some confirmation that the review has been posted. It looks a little sloppy when a whole piece of the layout completely disappears like that.

A forum-esque message like the following would be excellent:

Quote

Thanks!  Your review has been posted.

Click here to return to the reviews page for <game>.

Click here to return to the game archive.

The first link would, well, duh. The second one would take the user back to the letter that the game is listed in (for instance, if you reviewed "Hunt the Wumpus 3D" it would take you to the H section).

  • RSS feed for 5-10 recent reviews

Seriously, this is a really good suggestion, I think. It's not hard to do, either, every time a review is added just regenerate the xml file. If you want help with creating one, check out the RSS editor Firefox extension.

Spectere, there is a page... almost exactly like that.
It disappeared for some reason. It still works in the Test site.

Lancer: Delete your own reviews? Theres already a delete function for admins, so this would be fairly easy to implement I guess.

you should add a download count number in the games section (if that's possible).

what about a Madtom's pick style section? On Z2, one of the oldbies Madtom has a section where he picks a game each month, and gives it a review, why he likes it, ect. He has about 20 MTP's so far. It would help people by sugesting good games to get.
